What Are Boiler Mountings & Accessories

Published: 6 Oct 2025

Boilers are essential parts of every power plant and industrial setup. They help convert water into steam, which is used for heating, power generation, and many other processes. To make boilers work safely and efficiently, special fittings called boiler mountings and accessories are installed. These two parts may sound similar, but they serve very different purposes. Let’s understand them in detail.

What Are Boiler Mountings & Accessories

Boiler mountings are safety devices that ensure the boiler operates without danger. They protect the boiler from pressure build-up and overheating. On the other hand, boiler accessories are added to improve the performance and efficiency of the boiler.

In short:

Mountings = For safety.

Accessories = For better efficiency.

Both are vital for smooth boiler operation.

Boiler Mountings

Boiler mountings are directly mounted on the boiler body. They are necessary for safe operation and are legally required in every boiler setup.

1. Water Level Indicator

A water level indicator shows the level of water inside the boiler. It helps the operator keep track of the water quantity and prevents overheating or damage caused by low water levels. Usually, boilers have two indicators for better accuracy and safety.

2. Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge displays the steam pressure inside the boiler. It helps the operator to maintain the pressure within safe limits. Most gauges use the Bourdon tube type and are designed according to safety standards like EN 12953.

3. Safety Valve

The safety valve is one of the most important mountings. Its job is to release steam automatically when the pressure rises above a safe level. This prevents explosions and accidents. Every boiler must have at least one safety valve installed.

4. Stop Valve

The stop valve, also known as a crown valve, controls the flow of steam from the boiler to the steam pipe. It can stop or allow the steam flow when needed. The valve must be opened slowly to avoid sudden pressure changes or water hammer.

5. Blow Off Valve

The blow-off valve removes impurities and sediments that settle at the bottom of the boiler. This keeps the water clean and improves the boiler’s efficiency. It’s also used during maintenance or when the boiler needs to be drained.

6. Feed Check Valve

The feed check valve controls the flow of water from the feed pump to the boiler. It prevents the backflow of water or steam from the boiler into the pump, ensuring smooth and safe operation.

7. Fusible Plug

The fusible plug protects the boiler from overheating. It is made of a metal alloy that melts when the temperature becomes too high. This allows steam to escape, lowering the temperature and preventing damage or explosion.

Accessories

Boiler accessories are not mandatory, but they help increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. They are usually connected externally to the boiler.

1. Economiser

An economiser is used to preheat the feed water using the heat from the flue gases. This reduces fuel use and increases boiler efficiency. It helps save energy and makes the system more eco-friendly.

2. Air Pre-heater

The air pre-heater warms the air before it enters the combustion chamber. This improves fuel burning and overall efficiency. It also helps reduce smoke and increase heat transfer.

3. Superheater

A superheater increases the temperature of steam above its boiling point without raising pressure. This superheated steam is used to drive turbines and increase power output. It reduces steam consumption and enhances performance.

4. Feed Pump

The feed pump continuously supplies water to the boiler. It maintains the water level and ensures uninterrupted steam generation. Without this pump, the boiler could run dry and overheat.

5. Steam Separator

A steam separator removes moisture from the steam. Dry steam improves turbine efficiency and prevents damage caused by water droplets. It ensures that only dry, pure steam reaches the system.

6. Steam Trap

The steam trap automatically removes condensed steam or water from the steam line. It helps maintain steam quality and prevents heat loss. Steam traps are small but vital components for efficient steam systems.

Advantages of Boiler Mountings & Accessories

  • Ensure the safety of boiler operation.
  • Improve boiler performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Reduce energy waste through heat recovery.
  • Maintain steady pressure and water levels.
  • Prevent accidents and equipment damage.

Disadvantages of Boiler Mountings & Accessories

  • Requires regular maintenance to stay effective.
  • Installation costs can be high for large systems.
  • Accessories like economisers or superheaters need extra space.
  • If neglected, faulty mountings can cause safety risks.

Conclusion

Boiler mountings and accessories play a vital role in making boilers safe, efficient, and long-lasting. Mountings protect the boiler from hazards, while accessories enhance its output and performance. Together, they ensure the smooth and reliable operation of any steam system. Proper inspection and maintenance of these components are essential for safe and efficient boiler operation in every industry.
